Eating Right for Cancer Survival

Surviving Cancer with Nutrition

10-06-2008

More and more physicians are convinced they should write a prescription for exercise and diet, just as they write one for medication when it comes to surviving cancer. Eating the right foods along with exercising regularly is advice most people know about and now some doctors say it is a key factor for surviving cancer in the long-run.

Long thought to be irreversible, science has recently begun to view cancer in a new light: as a disease that can be reversed. Surgery is simply the first step of damage control: when the surgeons pronounce that they “got all of it”, what they really mean is that they removed the tumor and the cancer cells that could be detected with current medical procedures. Biologists have known for at least two decades that it is a rare cancer that can be completely cured through surgery. In many cases microscopic cancer cells remain undetected, for months or years, and then return with a vengeance.

Recent research now indicates that nutrition has a vital role in cancer survival.  Study after study has shown that a comprehensive treatment plan must include an aggressive nutrition component that strengthens the immune system to attack and kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery temporarily reduce the tumor burden but do not change the underlying cause of the disease.

A small but increasing number of health care professionals now believe that following a specific mostly plant-based diet, eliminating all animal protein including meat, chicken, fish and dairy products, are the very prescription to not only prevent cancer but to also survive the disease.

Cultures that already adhere to this type of diet have a much higher survival rate of cancer. The greatest potential for long-term cancer survival is likely to be found not in surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation, but in something everyone has absolute personal control of: nutrition.
